EXTRA LIFE | Chapter One - Just Add Water…

Life as an Extra. I can’t promise Ricky Gervais-like celebrity guest moments but I can offer a few insights into a slightly different creative process.

Working as an extra can be fun.
It's all a little Forrest Gump – you never know what you’re gonna get on the day. Or who you will rub shoulders with. But I’m not going to drop any names. That’s not what this is about.

I’ve had quite a few gig’s now. I really enjoy the arbitrary nature of it all – that is, you can be 'placed' anywhere on the set by random chance only to find yourself in a key focus of a scene with someone you've only seen on a DVD at home.

It’s like an acting masterclass where you get paid to rock up to be a fly on the wall and watch professionals, while you lounge around trying to keep out of the way until you’re actually needed. If you’re really observant you can learn up a lot and pick up a few tricks.

It’s the only job I can think of in the world where you get paid to stand/sit around doing nothing.
