'MTC Artistic Director Brett Sheehy explains, “(as part of the NEON readings) these three works come from writers of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, each with a unique take on contemporary Australian life.”' - Mar 1, 2015, http://www.theatrepeople.com.au - Neon 2015.
It also confirms Sean McIntyre as one of "Melbourne's most interesting new voices" -- Feb 26, 2015, www.theatrealive.com.au - News
He again teams with Chilean-born, Melbourne-based director Marco Romero, founder of Melbourne's Spanish Theatre.
MTC CONNECT exists to engage talented theatre practitioners from diverse communities to build a richer arts landscape
"'KIDS' is an ideal vehicle through which we can explore and present themes of identity, being a refugee, empathy, migration and Australia's attitudes to immigration", said director Marco Romero. "Broader political issues such as detention of refugees, acceptance of same and how people integrate into, contribute and enrich Australian culture are also considered within 'KIDS'".
"As a proposed future project, 'KIDS' easily meets the criteria of MTC CONNECT", said writer Sean McIntyre, "while as an entertainment product, it also offers a unique commerciality".
Inspired by 'Juegos A La Hora De La Siesta' ('Games During Naptime'), by Polish-born Argentinean playwright Roma Mahieu, 'KIDS' is:
- Multicultural
- featuring characters as immigrants and/or refugees from areas such as Carlton, Dandenong, Brimbank and Deer Park, even affluent areas such as Balwyn.
- Diverse
- offers storytelling through multicultural, artistic voices seldom heard in mainstream theatre.
- New work
- intimate, compelling in its nature, 'KIDS' contains scenes of high drama and humour. As a developing or emerging work, such a project has never been seen in public before.
'KIDS' is their third commercial collaboration and full-length play for the stage. Planning and preparation for their fourth collaboration is well underway.
