ARTS | Newport Playwright Touches Base

NEWPORT playwright Mark Andrew will see his new play performed for the first time when the cast of Bomb the Base hit the stage at the Melbourne Fringe Festival tonight.

Andrew has had more than 30 of his plays performed in five different countries.

“I’m very excited as I’ve had many productions but never the Fringe,” he said.

Bomb the Base, directed by Louise Howlett, follows Alice, a Australian working as a political analyst in the US who returns home to her family on the eve of her uncle’s funeral.

Once home, Alice must deal with her own family’s history, relationships and secrets.

“It interweaves family politics and world politics,” Andrew said. “It’s quite a challenging, confronting story, so (the cast) have done well putting it together and inhabiting the characters.”

Andrew is currently the writer in residence for the Melbourne Writers’ Theatre 2011 season. His play Time’s Arrow will show at the Carlton Courthouse for two weeks in November.

Bomb the Base premieres at Studio 246 in Brunswick tonight, October 4, and runs until October 8. Tickets: 9660 9666 or go to melbournefringe.com.au
